This gorgeous piece was bought to a workshop we ran in Ingham in North Queensland by Jo the owner of Green Jelly Kitchen and Homewares – our wonderful Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effects stockist for the region.
It was painted two pack white and although the lines of it were fabulous
it lacked personality and its detail was lost. As the presenting surface of the tallboy was a high shiny gloss, the first step in the transformation was to give the piece a light key with some course sandpaper followed by a wiping down of the small amount of dust.
To best cover the white completely the first coat painted was Mezzie + Frank Kakadu followed by 2 coats of Coalmine. Allowing adequate drying time in between coats. As a more solid look was wanted the tallboy was only given a very light sand focusing on the features to bring them out by exposing the Kakadu underneath. A coat of our Carnauba Finishing Polish sealed the whole piece giving it a nice subtle sheen and giving depth to the rich coalmine colour.
The final step masterminded by Jo was to add the pressed metal. To achieve the dramatic results pressed metal panels were cut to size with a metal guillotine and glued into the drawer inlays using a multipurpose glue. Chrystal flower knobs were chosen to compliment the pressed metal.
We loved the results and all of this was achieved in a four hour period. The majority of work on the piece was done by Jo’s 13 year old daughter proving how easy it is to
